Canterbury Garden Rules and Policies

The following policies and rules have been established to make our gardens both productive and enjoyable for everyone involved.

Residents of Cleveland Heights who wish to garden must agree to abide by all rules, privide current contact information and sign a waiver releasing Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District and the City of Cleveland Heights from any liability.

Assignment of garden plots and all other space allocations are the responsibility of the Garden Leaders. Gardeners are not permitted to make changes in plot assignments without explicit approval. Such assignment is for the season (year) only. Preference for plots will be given to last years' gardeners in good standing.

A fee of $30 is due in full before plot assignment. This fee covers water charges, maintenance of rototiller, hoses, wheelbarrows and purchase of gasoline.

Each gardener is responsible for cleaning, planting, weeding and harvesting from his or her plot. This includes areas adjacent to it, such as the pathway and fencing. In the event of illness or vacation, it is the responsibility of the gardener to make prior arrangements for someone to tend his or her garden. Please notify the Garden Leaders of extended absences and any problems in this regard.

Children are welcome in the garden, but must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at all times.

Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash and confined to a designated area.

Application of herbicides in the gardens is prohibited. Use of environmentally safe pesticide products is encouraged to lessen the impact on bird and bee populations. Consult the bulletin board for any notices of meetings, workshops and other garden news.

Raised garden beds are allowed. However, only certain wood and other materials that will not contaminate the soil will be permitted.

Gardeners must take home any refuse (plastic bags, planting trays, plots, etc.). Trash bins on site are not for garden materials. Weeds and non-diseased plant material can be added to the compost piles at the west end of the garden.

Theft of garden produce or personal property, as well any vandalism, should be reported to the Garden Leaders. Tresspassers will be reported to the Cleveland Heights Police Department.

Water conservation is encouraged. The main water valve at the east end of the garden must be turned off by the last person in the garden. After watering, return hoses to their proper places in the pathway. Sprinklers or drop-hose irrigation systems are not allowed. Report any problems with the leaking hoses and valves immediately to Garden Leaders.

The last person out of the garden is responsible for locking the gates. The gates should be locked at all times when a gardener is not present.
